Scientology was founded by a science fiction writer Ron Hubbard. His book “Dianetics” became a basis for new religion. Hubbard also accepted the existence of Supreme Being. Scientology has three basic principles, such as spiritual nature of man, constant extension of life experience, and a man with unlimited abilities. The central practice of scientology is auditing. The auditing of a parishioner is counseled with an auditor. During this practice, an auditor or a scientology minister tries to reveal “engrams” of parishioner, using electropsychometer. Scientology is aimed to deliver the parishioners from “engrams” and reach the state of “Clear”. Scientology unites pseudoscientific and religious beliefs aimed at people striving for success.
Scientology attempts to be related to both science and religion. However, it is difficult to unite such completely different things. Both religion and science claim to be truthful. Science uses evidences and experiments to prove its claims, while religion relies on belief and faith. In opposition to science, religious claims can be hardly proved scientifically. Both religion and science try to explain a creation of the world but scientists base their researches on practice while religious figures rely on the belief and sacred scriptures. Science does not follow any moral principles, and religion is based on them. Religion embodies the spiritual world, and science is used in the physical world. In time, different scientific discoveries undermined the credibility of religious claims, which resulted in the popularization of atheism.
Technological progress, which occurred due to scientific achievements, leads to such a phenomenon in modern society as globalization. Globalization is a worldwide process of intensification of world interrelation and social influence. It is a social and economic integration of the world. Globalization also spreads different movements against women’s oppression. It is supposed that most world religions restrict women’s rights and freedoms. Such tensions, together with the information revolution, highly promoted atheism in society. Atheism grows popular because of total rejection of any supreme beings; as a result, it rejects any punishments for sins, etc. The personal freedom appeals to atheists.
Globalization is completely secular phenomenon. It does not support or represent any religion. In most countries, religious figures are not significant and do not influence the state policy. Presidents are usually come from secular society. In comparison to Middle Ages, modern countries became more independent and separated from church. The growth of secularism among modern states is mostly caused by Islamic fundamentalism. Modern governments do not want to be dependent on the religious views. Being a secular state helps government to build relations with all countries throughout the world. At the same time, religious states are required to conduct their foreign policy based on religious views. Also, the domestic policy of religious states relies on religion, while in secular states, the law is uniform for all citizens independently from their religious affiliation.
Although globalization seems to eliminate the influence and popularity of religion, hundreds of new religions appeared in the twentieth century. Pagan religions are also growing popular as they are considered the return to the original religion of the humankind. Wicca is a contemporary pagan religion but supposed to be a revival of an ancient religion. The followers of Wicca named wiccans are united into covens. They also use coppers and brooms for their rituals, which resembles traditions of medieval witches. Wiccans call both men and women witches. As well as druids, wiccans found their religion on Celtic legends and beliefs.
It is commonly known that technological progress and globalization cause a great environmental pollution, which often becomes a basis for claims about the end of the world. It is also used by religious figures and so-called prophets for intimidation of people. Religion opposes to globalization, thus environment is a suitable way to popularize religion and promote its views. However, there is no doubt that globalization negatively influences environment, and praying is not the best solution to struggle against environmental pollution.
Some churches practice mass marriages, when hundreds or even thousands of people get married at the same time. Probably, the most known church practicing mass marriages is the Unification Church. Moreover, the head of this church also chooses husbands for women who are the parishioners of his sanctuary. In most popular world religions, mass marriage is prohibited and there are a lot of other prohibitions concerning marriage. There is a marriageable age in every religion, which restricts too young people from marriage. Another point is same-sex marriages. However, nowadays same-sex marriages are massively accepted at government level. All these alterations mostly happen under the influence of globalization.
Everyone may believe in god without belonging to any religion. It means that a person is not an atheist but he accepts existence of some supreme being. Such people are convinced that they do not need any mediators like priests for communication with god. Religion was always a tool of power elite and there were enough wars triggered by religion. However, for people who do not attend churches, god lives in their hearts and souls. Therefore, one can believe in god without following any religion or doctrine that was imposed by a prophet or pseudo prophet.
